Unsure what system you have? Let us tell you.

What are the benefits?

1. Cheaper energy

One of the main reasons people are considering ground source heat pumps for heating is due to rising energy bills.

If you're on a fixed tariff, you might be worried about it ending and the need to renegotiate. If you're already on a variable rate, your heating costs could be increasing each month.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that homes with outdated electric storage heaters could save up to £1,600 annually.

Access to a renewable heat energy source that helps lower bills is a strong incentive. Even though installation costs can be high, the low running costs make it an appealing option.

2. Green Energy

Another major benefit is the reduction in carbon emissions. Ground source heat pumps offer an excellent alternative to gas boilers.

They work by using a ground loop to efficiently absorb heat, which is then transferred into your home, allowing you to harness the thermal energy from beneath your property.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that switching from coal systems to a ground source heat pump could save up to 7,000 kg of CO2 per year.

3. Low Maintenance

Another advantage of installing a ground source heat pump is that it requires minimal maintenance. The pumps usually last as long as a traditional boiler.

The ground loop system can last up to 70 years, so you won’t need to worry about replacing it for a long time.

4. Continuous heat

You may wonder if the ground temperature will be impacted during winter. While the top layer may freeze or become frosty, there’s still plenty of natural heat deeper down, where your ground loop system is installed.

This can also be advantageous for homeowners in the event of gas supply issues or maintenance work that temporarily cuts off the supply.

5. Energy Efficiency

A ground source heat pump enhances your home's energy efficiency in several ways. First, it reduces the amount of gas needed for heating. By utilizing a renewable energy source on your property, you'll see immediate benefits.

Another way ground source heat pumps boost efficiency is through their heating process. Unlike gas boiler systems, these pumps don’t operate at such high temperatures, which encourages homeowners to take steps to improve efficiency, such as upgrading insulation in the home.

6. Government Funding
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative aimed at encouraging more people in England and Wales to install low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers (which burn natural materials like wood pellets, chips, or logs), to help reduce their carbon footprint.

Please note, the grant will only cover biomass boilers in rural areas, in homes that are not connected to the gas grid, and where an emissions certificate shows that pollutant emissions are minimized.

Launched in April 2022, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be available until 2028. With grants of £7,500 available.
